MENTORING

SPILL’s Artistic Director, Robin Deacon, has over 20 years’ experience helping artists realise their ideas with focused and nurturing packages of mentoring. He has taught at art schools and universities all over the world, as well as mentoring young and emerging artists in festivals and exhibitions. Most recently, this has included bespoke one-to-one sessions for SPILL’s residency artists, and as the ‘outside eye’ on self-determined development programmes supported by artists’ Developing Your Creative Practice (DYCP) grants. Robin can provide a unique perspective as both an artist and a curator.

What can Robin offer you and your project?

  • Hour-long mentoring sessions on a new idea or developing work

  • Programmes of multiple sessions supporting a longer project or DYCP programme

  • Studio visits

  • Crit sessions

Robin’s approach goes beyond simply ‘giving feedback’; instead, he will be part of a dialogue with you and your work to help you generate ideas and build on your creative practice.

All packages of mentoring include appropriate advance preparation time (such as exploring your past documentation or reading selected research materials).

To make an enquiry about Robin’s mentoring services, please email robin@spillfestival.com with a clear indication of your primary goals, preferred format and schedule, and available budget. Prices are flexible according to your project and its sources of funding. We are very happy to accommodate short speculative conversations (<30 mins) in advance of fundraising.

Robin’s specialisms include:

  • Creative processes, ideas generation and getting a concept on its feet

  • Interdisciplinary artistic practice (with emphasis on performance, writing, film/video and sound art)

  • Education and teaching practices (and how they might relate to art-making)

  • Getting to grips with international performance and visual arts networks
