ABSORBED IN THE VISIONS, MEMORIES, PROPHECIES AND OBSERVATIONS RECORDED IN LEONARDO DA VINCI’S NOTEBOOKS, A WOMAN DWELLS ON THE WRITING OF A LIFE.
As oracle, scholar, acolyte, medium and innocent she voices the spirit of Leonardo, reflecting the nature of life as it moves closer to its end, its teeming presence, the meaning we divine from marks and signs, the flight of the voice, living and dying.
Out of apocalypse comes death-not-death. Everything must end yet nothing is ever finished. The same world is transformed into colour, the sense of itself.
The idea for a semi-improvised opera was borne during Elaine Mitchener’s artist residency in Venice under the auspices of Fondazione Claudio Buziol and Muziektheater Transparant in 2010.
A vocalist working in the area of movement art and noted for her unique melding of vocal styles ranging from contemporary classical, jazz, free-improvisation. For Of Leonardo, Mitchener has worked with sound artist David Toop, filmmaker Barry Lewis to create this work and invited Dam Van Huynh to direct/choreograph it.
Together they have created a contemporary opera that intricately melds music, sound art, image and movement to explore space, inviting audiences into a unique and intimate realm of disturbing beauty.
